QUOTE OF THE MONTH: Today, see if you can stretch your
heart and expand your love so that it touches not only
those to whom you can give it easily, but also those who
need it so much. – Daphine Rose Kingman

CONSIDER THIS: Here’s a no cost prescription for heart
health from HeartMath.org.
“Heartfelt positive feelings create far more than a healthy
psychological effect. They fortify our internal energy
systems and nourish the body right down to the cellular
level.”

ARTICLE:

There are many legends written about the origin of
Valentine’s Day. The following version is one that
appears most frequently.

During the 3rd century, a priest by the name of
Valentinus, under Claudius II in Rome, secretly disobeyed
the law. Claudius had come to believe that a single
soldier was a better soldier than a married young man and
so decided to outlaw marriage in order to have plenty young
strong men with no wives at his disposal.

Valentinus, the priest, did not obey this law and continued
to celebrate the holy bond of marriage for young couples in
secrecy. He was found out, imprisoned and sentenced to
death.

During the last weeks of Valentinus's life a remarkable
thing happened. Seeing that he was a man of learning, the
jailer asked whether his daughter, Julia, might be brought
to Valentinus for lessons. She had been blind since
birth. Julia was a pretty young girl with a quick mind.
Valentinus read stories of Rome's history to her. He
described the world of nature to her. He taught her
arithmetic and told her about God. She saw the world
through his eyes, trusted his wisdom, and found comfort in
his quiet strength.

"Valentinus, does God really hear our prayers?" Julia asked
one day.

"Yes, my child, He hears each one."

"Do you know what I pray for every morning and every night?
I pray that I might see. I want so much to see
everything you've told me about!"

"God does what is best for us if we will only believe in
Him," Valentinus said.

"Oh, Valentinus, I do believe! I do!"

They sat quietly together, each praying. There was a
brilliant light in the prison cell. Suddenly Julia
exclaimed, "Valentinus, I can see! I can see!"

"Praise be to God!" Valentinus said, and he knelt in
prayer.

On the eve of his death Valentinus wrote a last note to
Julia, urging her to stay close to God. He signed it,
"From your Valentine." His sentence was carried out the
next day, February 14, 270 A.D. He was buried at what is
now the Church of Praxedes in Rome. It is said that Julia
planted a pink-blossomed almond tree near his grave.
Today, the almond tree remains a symbol of abiding love and
friendship.”

GOOD HUMOR/GOOD HEALTH:

I don't understand why Cupid was chosen to represent
Valentine's Day. When I think about romance, the last
thing on my mind is a short, chubby toddler coming at me
with a weapon. - Author Unknown

Love is the thing that enables a woman to sing while she
mops up the floor after her husband has walked across it in
his barn boots. -Hoosier Farmer

True love comes quietly, without banners or flashing
lights. If you hear bells, get your ears checked. -
Erich Segal
