WELLNESS TIP – REMEMBER TO BREATHE When you are feeling stressed, frenzied, overwhelmed, stop for a moment. Take a couple of breaths, inhaling as deeply as you can. Exhale slowly. Inhale deeply again. As you exhale let go of your tensions, worries, anxieties, thoughts. Inhale once again. This time as you inhale feel yourself being filled with relaxation, peacefulness and calm. Exhale slowly. Repeat if necessary. Then return to your activities. ANECTDOTE "Laughter is powerful medicine. Good Morning America had a segment on the healing effects of laughter. They reported on a study at the University of Maryland where patients were divided into two groups. One group watched the emotionally wrenching World War II movie, "Saving Private Ryan," and the other watched the comedy, "There's Something About Mary." The lead researcher, Dr. Michael Miller, said, "After watching a movie that caused stress, the blood vessel lining constricted or partially closed up, whereas after watching a movie that provoked laughter, the blood vessel lining opened up." In other words, laughing allows blood to flow more freely throughout the body, improving our overall health and well-being (and brain function, too!). As a matter of fact, based on their findings, the researchers suggested that a few hearty laughs were as good for you as jogging up to half an hour. I can see the classes already forming at local gyms: Laugh to Lose Weight! :^) Think about what might happen if you were to respond to a difficult situation in your life in a completely new and different way. Often, when we're angry, frustrated, or besieged by fear, we fall into the trap of believing that if we just ruminate over the problem long enough, we'll find a new answer. But, the opposite is true. We end up in the very same place we started -- stuck. In order to make a positive change, we must bring a whole new level of thinking to the issue at hand. To see what I mean, check out this week's "Take Action Challenge" and give laughter a try." - Cheryl Richardson, Nov. 5, 2006, Newsletter Week 45. GOOD HUMOR/GOOD HEALTH Make a little time in each day for some fun. Watching small children or pets at play is a great way to remind us of how to have fun. Their play comes from a place of innocence and lack of inhibition. Years ago when I lived on a small farm. We had an amazing cat. This cat was the embodiment of how to have a good time. The entire farm was his playground; the other animals were his playmates. However, they didn’t always know it. I recall a time when A.B. (the cat) would creep stealthily into the chicken yard and hide under some bushes. He waited for the chickens to congregate nearby. Then he would pounce at them but never touching them. He just seemed to enjoy watching them flap and cackle about as if they were chickens with their heads cut off while their heads were still on. Then he‚d be off to check up on the goats, or pig or field mice. Whatever he did to amuse himself was always completely harmless and just for the joy it gave him. How about adding a flapping chicken to your day!
